Baduanjin vs the Twelve-Section Brocade

Baduanjin and the Twelve-Section Brocade are separate promoted routines. Baduanjin has eight movements and is usually taught standing; the Twelve-Section Brocade has twelve named forms and is traditionally seated. Historical names and relationships vary across sources, so this page compares the modern routines rather than presenting one simple origin story.

Why the names are confusing

The names overlap in historical and modern teaching material. The Twelve-Section Brocade (十二段锦) is often discussed alongside seated Baduanjin or wen baduanjin (文八段锦), but sources do not support reducing the relationship to a single, uncontested timeline.

The two routines have different sequences and published teaching materials. Both appear in national Health Qigong promotion materials; see the linked sources for the programme history.

Which to choose

  • Want a short daily practice you can memorise quickly? Baduanjin.
  • Want something slower, longer, and more static, with self-massage? The Twelve-Section Brocade.
  • Cannot get down onto the floor? Baduanjin seated, or this site's chair version of the Twelve-Section Brocade.
  • Want both? They complement each other well — Baduanjin in the morning, the Twelve-Section Brocade in the evening.

A note on the floor cushion

Published versions of the Twelve-Section Brocade use a floor-seated position and may specify a cushion. This site provides chair adaptations for accessibility; they are not the official floor form. Choose a setup that is safe for your own transfers and range of movement.

Doing this seated

Both routines end up available from a chair on this site: the eight-movement Baduanjin set through the seated adaptation of each movement, and the Twelve-Section Brocade through a chair version of each of its twelve.

Common questions

Is the Twelve-Section Brocade just longer Baduanjin?

No. It has its own history, its own sequence and a different emphasis — far more stillness, breathing and self-massage, and much less large limb movement.

Which one is better for someone who cannot stand?

The published floor form of the Twelve-Section Brocade is seated, but this site's chair version remains an adaptation. Choose a version based on your ability to transfer and sit comfortably.

Are both officially recognised?

Both appear in Chinese Health Qigong promotion materials. The linked source records the current programme list; this page does not make a claim about every historical edition or designation.

Do I need a cushion for the Twelve-Section Brocade?

For the standard floor version, yes — a firm wedge cushion is used. For the chair version on this site, no. A stable chair is all you need.
